Boxer Dog Behavior Characteristics And Training

Posted by madee998 on April 1st, 2010

The Boxer breed is a fantastic dog that often has a mistaken perception as being a fussy and slightly skittish animal. In fact this is far from the truth, by nature they need a great amount of attention and love and without this they become skittish. Indeed, if you lead a very active lifestyle that means you will have to spend a lot of time away from the home then you are probably wise not to get a Boxer dog.

Having said that, if you do decide to get a Boxer then here are some facts about Boxer dogs. It will start by helping you select the best boxer puppy for your family.

Do your research before selecting an individual puppy or a litter to select from. Some common wisdom before making a selection is to view the parents of the litter first. This will give you an some pointers on the temperament and behavior of the parents and an indication of how the puppies may grow up to behave.

It is also a good idea to find a boxer from a non commercial breeder who does it for the love of it rather than to make money. This means the dogs are likely to be well cared for and be more sociable.

According to the American Kennel Club the Boxer breed is in the top ten of purebred dogs in terms of popularity. They are a medium sized dog that are energetic and very inquisitive. Consequently they will require more attention and cost more than a small toy breed of dog.

Food costs and other expenses like treats and toys will be more for a Boxer than many other breeds. Although being a short haired dog you will not need to do much grooming. For some strange reason they are not keen on water either so that will make bathing a lot of fun !

Boxers are noted for being very social animals. They love living in a family unit and crave attention and affection. You should strive to keep them active and busy. Left alone they will become bored and lonely. This can lead to bad behavioral habits and quite destructive tendencies.

Space is important to a Boxer dog. It is not practical to keep a dog such a this in an apartment. It needs a home with an ample backyard where it can run around and tire itself out. You can plant dog treats in areas of the yard so that your pet will rummage around and be kept active. Get it lots of toys to keep it busy too. Boxers will spend many hours ragging toys and this fits their nature perfectly.

The Excessive energy levels of your boxer may make it harder to obedience train. They will lose focus quickly, consequently positive reinforcement training where you are catching the dogs attention is the best training method.

Start the training early, when they are puppies. This includes socializing them with other family members and animals. A well adjusted dog is generally happier and more open to training methods.

Given their exuberant nature you may want to make the environment where the dog is trained quiet and distraction free. Thus your pet may not be the best pupil in a group obedience training class with lots of other pooches to distract it. Obedience training is a big task when it comes to any dog, let alone a Boxer but it is certainly worth making this commitment. They are an intelligent animal and love the close relationship with their owner that obedience training requires.

Boxing Styles: The Three Main Types

Posted by madee998 on March 31st, 2010

There are three main types of styles that boxers fall into when boxing. These reflect how they move and how they punch. It is generally thought that the styles are a lot like rock, paper, scissors in that one style beats another while it will generally lose to the third. However, this has been disproved many times and is only accepted as true.

The first style we will mention is the Brawler. This type of boxer will generally throw single and powerful punches against their opponent. A lot of brawlers are able to throw a punch which can knock out an opponent in a single blow. The biggest problem with this fighting technique is how slow the boxers usually are to punch. By being so slow they can be countered a lot more easily.

The next type of style is that of the Inside Fighter. This type of style is usually played very aggressively and incorporates an “in your face” type of play. The idea is for the boxer to get and stay close to his opponent and knock him out with multiple fast punches. This is a great class to be used by medium weight boxers.

The final type of style is that of the Outside Fighter. Boxers who use this style type will generally stay toward the outside of the ring and work on keeping their opponents away from them. The idea is to wear out your opponent rather than knock him out. This style is usually played by lighter class boxers who don’t have the strength for heavy punches.

There are some boxers who have become good at using all of these styles to their advantage. By using multiple style types they can keep their opponent off balance as to how they will play. Some of the best are the Brawlers who can also use good footwork and speed.

The Best Boxing Training Secrets For Fat Loss

Posted by madee998 on March 30th, 2010

CB: How do boxers get so lean, and what lessons can us average folk take from their regimens?

RP: I know this point is redundantly made but it’s true.

People spend to much time training with cardio equipment. I have seen people train on cardio equipment, and their body’s still look the same months later!

When the average person has had enough of walking around in their body they are in they usually think of hitting the pavement running. Or people will train with the typical cardio circuit of elliptical and treadmills etc…Training for long and very casual intensities. Raising cortisol levels, preserving fat, etc…

People who perform a boxing workout get lean from the intense anaerobic way they train. Boxers fight and train in rounds lasting from 2 minutes to 3 minutes in duration. The training done for that duration is generally at a higher intensity. The training equipment also demands you get lean by the way the bags have to be worked.

Put it this way to maximally work and move the heavy bag in the right manner burns allot of calories and takes allot of effort to do. Your body then takes the lean shape from the aftermath of this demand of it to put forth the work. Same thing for the punch mitts when used correctly your whole body is moving and working and in a more anaerobic and intense manner than aerobic training.

Many times people who cross train or want to learn boxing for self defense are amazed at how sore they are in different areas of their body from the workout. They are waking and working muscles that have been dormant for some time in a unison intense manner.

Metabolically speaking, as stated several times above since the training is predominantly anaerobic and because we use allot of intervals our metabolic rates are greatly increased.

Unlike the aerobic way people train where they only burn calories for the duration of their aerobic activity or training. With anaerobic interval work your metabolic rate is increased for hours even after training is complete as you obviously know.

CB: What’s the role of slow cardio in stripping fat from a boxer’s body?

RP: Not much at all….

We condition using sprints, sled work, sledge strikes, change of direction runs, sprint and run drills, but really speaking from a fighters perspective, nothing beats intense sparring to get in shape. We also perform intervals of heavy and fast punching on the bags and punch mitts.

As far as the average client, I’ll never forget when I was working in Syracuse NY I was training an older guy named Tom. Tom couldn’t lose any more weight in a satisfying way. He was on a plateau.

He was training aerobically only for the last 2 years playing musical chairs with the cardio equipment. He was very frustrated and bored that he couldn’t drop and shed any more fat.

So upon working with him. I had him jumping rope, working the punch mitts, working the heavy bag and VERY easily he lost 14 pounds in 6 weeks! Not bad for previously being on a plateau! The pounds literally melted off. Because of the intense anaerobic way he trained and the muscles and movements he was using in training this way.

Fortunately for me communicating with the best strength and conditioning coaches and constantly reading and studying the best books keeps me abreast of what methods work best.

CB: How do you and other boxers get lean for fights in terms of nutrition?

RP: We start cleaning house!

Or should I say cleaning the fridge, freezer and cupboards. I have them get rid of the processed boxed, package, frozen packaged, canned foods. I have them stop eating then sugary cereals, soda, sugary juices, white breads, refined carbs, margarine, just garbage food period! This goes along way with improving performance, vitality, and weight loss obviously.

I then have them start to eat real whole foods. Foods that actually have a life source and will deliver nutrients and vitality to them.

So for weight loss having them eliminate the garbage foods and drinks and having them eating smaller meals frequently throughout the day works big time for weight loss on top of the kick butt training their doing.

It still amazes me on how many people skip breakfast. Or if they do have it, the typical sugar water called orange juice with a pop tart doesn’t do it. I have them eat a better breakfast and make sure their dinner isn’t the biggest meal of the day as their stomachs would suggest if it is.

My point is, typically people skip breakfast, eat a rather large lunch, and when they get home have a feast for dinner. That’s obviously insane if you want to drop weight and get lean!

Don’t eat less meals. Eat more meals frequently with less food for weight loss. Their blood sugar levels are more balanced and their moods and energy levels are far more enhanced by eating more frequently, like 5-6 times per day if possible.

I also have them drink half their body weight in ounces of water per day. (Many people are dehydrated) and I have them consume fish oils at their meals.

I also keep critiquing their eating habits and food choices for weight loss as needed…

CB: Do you use boxer’s training techniques in your client’s workouts? If so, what could I do to speed my fat loss?

RP: Boxing workouts are BIG in my clients workouts.

It’s no wonder that the most popular classes in commercial gyms are martial arts classes.

Unfortunately many of those are watered down. By getting your eating habits under control and cleaned up and by jumping rope, shadow boxing, working the punch mitts, heavy bag, double end bag and speed bag you literally melt that fat off your body in a quick manner.

That’s why I like to use boxing training techniques. Boxing training gets results.

People can get bored with the cardio equipment. You can be totally uncoordinated and not improve upon before or after getting on the bike or stair master.

Not when you jump rope and perform the rest of a boxing workout. That’s why it delivers so much in one workout. All those bio-motor abilities you improve on top of shredding the fat from your body.

CB: What methods of strength training do you prefer? Do you use free weights or a lot of body weight exercises?

RP: Strength training methods will depend on the persons training age, background, weaknesses, needs, goals, and were we are from a fight.

So I have a lot of tools in the tool box I can use depending on the above scenarios.

Generally I start off with body weight exercises. I totally agree with what Alwyn Cosgrove says, “If we cannot stabilize and move our own body weight, we have no reason to use external resistance”

Once a person can handle there own body weight we use different strength exercises. We use squats, I’m particularly fond of front squats since we can work the often times weak thoracic extensors while also strengthening our legs. A boxer that has been at it for a while will will have an increased kyphotic posture along with pronated shoulders. So we need to correct this if we want to improve performance.

We also use dead-lifts, single leg work, posterior chain work, core strengthen with more transverse plain exercises, but we also perform reverse crunches they are a great abdominal strengthening exercise that also help in improving posture.

A lot of unilateral work. Also presses, split stance single arm pushes, pulls, rows, chins, pull ups, you name.

We use equipment ranging from db’s, barbells, med balls, sand bags, kegs, sled, sledge hammer, I’m going to start using kettle bells more. Once again, these are all great tools we use depending on the situation.

Corrective exercises are used to keep the fighters muscle imbalances and posture in check.

I will say that generally fighters are bloody weak! So I like to improve and focus on maximal strength training. Hypertrophy training can be used if I have a fighter that wants to move up a weight class or needs a little more muscle.

For our dynamic training, I like to used med balls and other plyometric exercise for explosive power.

That pretty much sums it up as our training is ALWAYS evolving and improving as I continue to study and learn and as we progress in our own training.

CB: Do the boxing workouts require any special equipment?

RP: Yes the workout uses special equipment that is very affordable and can be purchased at sporting stores, or boxing equipment magazines.

You will need hand wraps, a jump rope, gloves, punch mitts, a heavy bag, double end bag, speed bag and a small timer that you can by at any store. You don’t have to get all the bags at once you can still burn allot of fat with the jump rope and heavy bag alone. The other equipment just really speeds the results.

Training, Diet And Preparation For Kickboxing Tournaments

Posted by madee998 on March 27th, 2010

The true origins of kickboxing date back over 2,000 years but although classed as a martial art, Kickboxing Tournaments are relatively new and the sport of kickboxing was started in the US in the early 1970’s. Many American Karate practitioners were sick of the strict controls placed on all traditional forms of martial arts tournaments and formed a break away group and thus kick boxing came into being with full contact kicks and punches that were formally banned in martial arts competitions At that time many people were worried by the chance of high injury rates so protective clothing was added and safety rules were put into place. The kickboxing tournaments we see today vary in style and are closely related to their traditional martial art style.

People take kickboxing classes for a number of reasons and learning kickboxing techniques is a great way of protecting yourself. Kickboxing classes are becoming extremely popular for fitness and many personal trainers are adopting forms of kickboxing for their clients. Most importantly are those individuals to whom kickboxing is their sport and indeed to some that are totally committed, kickboxing becomes a way of life and entering kickboxing tournaments a personal challenge.

Preparing for these tournaments is heard work as fitness levels must be high. Not only does the artist have to deliver powerful kicks and punches but has to be fit enough to avoid their opponent and or recover from the impact themselves. It is necessary to build up muscle strength and tone the entire body with weight training, increase endurance with cardiovascular work such as running, skipping and jumping etc. Flexibility is all important not only when competing in kick boxing tournaments but to limber up and relax before hand to eliminate stress and strain and help avoid serious injury and also to cool down afterwards to avoid muscle stiffness.

Diet needs to be strictly adhered to. Low in fats, high in protein and the necessary amount of carbohydrates as fuel. Plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables round off the diet. It is necessary for all of us to drink enough water and it is recommended that the average person needs about 8 glasses a day and those in high exercise groups such as the kick boxer training for and entering kickboxing tournaments will require much more. The martial artist must stay hydrated at all times for peak performance. If not the artist will suffer from muscle soreness, fatigue and will not recover as quickly. Junk food, alcohol and caffeine are a no go. As with all martial arts the power of the mind is all important. Controlling our emotions and concentrating on our movements can make the difference to winning or loosing. Keeping tempers under control and relaxing into our moves makes for stronger and more accurate kicks and punches.

Preparation for kickboxing tournaments depends a lot on the level of fitness and the determination of the martial artist and can take a considerable amount of training and indeed time.

Does Your Dog Leak Urine?

Posted by madee998 on March 26th, 2010

Urinary incontinence is a common disorder of older female dogs, as many as 20% of neutered bitches develop it at some point in their lives. The reason is usually urethral sphincter mechanism incompetence (USMI). It can happen to any breed, though Boxers, Dobermanns and Collie breeds are particularly susceptible. In this article we review the current state of knowledge on this condition, focusing on the management and treatment options.

What is Urethral Sphincter Mechanism Incompetence (USMI)?

Affected bitches that are affected by this have poor tone to the smooth muscle surrounding their urethra (the tube that connects the bladder with the vagina), and often a shorter urethra than normal, and a bladder neck that is positioned too far back in the abdomen.

There are a number of contributing factors to this condition developing, but the main ones are breed susceptibility, obesity, body size, bladder position and spaying (neutering). Spaying is thought to have an effect by decreasing the estrogen levels, which affects the local muscle tone. However, most spayed bitches do not develop the condition and it should certainly not be used as an excuse not to neuter, as the increased likelihood of cancer in non neutered bitches is far more worrying.

What are the clinical signs?

The disorder is characterized by the passive leakage of urine without the dog noticing, often during sleep or rest while the dog is lying down. The owner usually remarks how there is always a stench of urine coming from the dogs bedding, and how the dog seems permanently wet and smelly around the back end. Continual leakage can also cause scalding of the skin around the vulva and groin.

How is it diagnosed?

Diagnosis is usually made based on the history. The pattern of urination is important to rule out other causes of incontinence. Urinalysis, radiography and ultrasonography can be performed for confirmation if necessary (e.g. to assess the location of the bladder neck within the abdomen).

Treatment

The goal of treatment is to increase the tone of the urethral smooth muscle. This can be done medically, surgically or by both. Medical treatment is either by giving estrogens or adrenergic drugs.

Estrogens

Estrogens have been used for a long time as HRT in post menopausal women. Estriol, a naturally occurring estrogen, is available as a licensed veterinary product and works by restoring the normal function of the urethral sphincter muscle, and increasing the sensitivity of the urogenital tract to adrenergic stimulation. Side effects traditionally associated with long term estrogen use include bone marrow depletion, but this has not been observed with Incurin, the licensed veterinary drug.

Adrenergic drugs

Adrenergic drugs stimulate relaxation of the bladder wall and contraction of the urethral sphincter simultaneously. Both of these actions facilitate urine storage. Phenylpropanolamine (Propalin, Vetoquinol) is the most frequently used drug for this, and is extremely effective in the majority of cases.

Surgery

Surgery is usually only appropriate if medical treatment has failed to control the incontinence. The procedure most often used performed is colposuspension, which involves pulling the bladder neck and vagina forwards from within the pelvis to an abdominal position. This has a cure rate of about 50%.

Another technique is the transpelvic sling, where a ribbon is passed through the obturator foramen in the pelvis and between the urethra and vagina. The ribbon is pulled tight and fixed to itself. This may be performed in addition to colposuspension.

A less invasive technique is endoscopic injection of Teflon or collagen into the urethra about 1.5cm away from the bladder neck, artificially increasing the tone of the smooth muscle there. This has a reported success rate of just over 50%, and is sometimes done alongside adrenergic medication.

Create A Boxing Gym Of Your Own

Posted by madee998 on March 23rd, 2010

Boxing training is considered to be one of the best ways to keep your body fit and strong. It is a whole body fitness program.

Generally, people manage with a punching bag when at home. But, that is not enough. You can create your own boxing gym at home. It is very easy.

Earlier, the home boxing gym used to have a nostalgic look. Here, the boxers and warriors were trained periodically and strenuously.

When we think of a proverbial boxing gym, what comes to mind is an image of a physically unattractive old brick building typically made of brick and mortar!

In those days, out of hundreds of aspiring athletes and boxers, only a few managed to fight their way to victory at the big ring and the elusive championship.

In the present scenario, boxing, as a sport, has declined.

Modern gyms, on the other hand, are very attractive. They provide the boxers with ultra exclusive electronic fitness equipment and a boxing area with simplistic equipment as well. These include a punching bag, leather medicine ball, treadmill and a jump rope.

All these elements of boxer training are extremely useful in providing strength, cardiovascular health and endurance.

As it is not very difficult to have all the above mentioned simple equipments at home, it is not a bad idea to have a boxing gym of your own. This will help you to stay in the best form and will always keep you healthy.

Bear in mind that it is not just strength that is needed to win. Besides strength, the perception of strength, endurance and determination are also under scrutiny at the ringside.

You ought to fight your own battle. Popularity can only get you some cheering, but performance factors still remain to be important if you wish to win.

Thus, it is necessary that you should do the boxing workouts regularly. A home boxing gym will provide you with a legitimate place in sports fitness and in areas of physical training.

Boxing training is the only way in which you can tone up every single muscle of your body. In fact, working on every single muscle is important for any home exercise program.

Many of you believe that boxing is just the right way to improve the muscles and make your legs and arms more active. But this is for your information that boxing will improve your self-defense, concentration and confidence.

Techniques of Boxing

A perfect boxing training is all about few right movements and a lot of hard work. The most popular moves are power punches, aerobic moves, sparring jabs and kicks actions. If you practice the moves under the supervision of a skilled trainer then the chances are very high that you will own a perfectly shaped body with extreme swiftness and reflex.

This is also a good way to burn the excess flab around your tummy. Did you know that if you practice full fledged boxing for one hour without taking short breaks then you will end up loosing almost 500 calories?

The heart rate is maintained at around 80%. The boxing programs are different for various levels. The beginners start with the nominal boxing schedules and gradually move to the next level when they are very much comfortable with the existing level.

How to Start Boxing?

Yesternight you and your family decided that you should start boxing and you will start it from the next morning – this is not possible as you need to do little preparation for this. First of all find out a place at home where you can start practicing the basic kicks and punches with a sandbag.

You can turn your backyard or a garage into a boxing ground. Buy some good quality gloves as they are the most important equipment for the boxers. Then you will need a tutor who can teach you the core techniques of boxing. Yes you can seek help from the boxing videos and books but the best way to learn is to get someone who can show you the punches and hits practically. If you do not have anybody at home who can help you this way then go ahead and join the nearest boxing club to stay fit forever.

Boxer Puppy Training Basics

Posted by madee998 on March 20th, 2010

You know that any new addition to your home, especially a puppy, needs plenty of attention and be cared for extensively. Before purchasing a live household member, get the facts about their routine, their everyday life and their traits. If you don’t, you may regret getting the puppy later. Mull over these things before your purchase:

First thing – learn about the puppy’s distinguishing traits and their conduct. If they have a lifestyle that is vastly different from your own, you may want to try to find another puppy. Boxer puppies want someone to pay attention to them at all times. If they aren’t, they’ll try to get it by doing something naughty. Puppies that are lonely and bored can become ill. Try to give it regular exercise to avoid any emotional and physical pain.

Second thing – boxer puppies like to live life carefree and may wander around aimlessly. Since they can be so active, it would be in your best interest to move any valuables from his/her path. Boxers make wonderful buddies for young children. While having babies/toddlers in the same room with boxers is fine, never leave them unattended together. The boxer may accidentally hurt the child.

Third thing – boxers are sociable and want to be around people and other animals. It is a very good trait to have in animals so you want to encourage that. When he/she is a puppy, introduce them to tons of people and pets. You want the socialization to be with the right kind of people so your puppy can know the difference as he/she matures.

Fourth thing – If it seems your puppy is very shy, get him/her socialization as soon as possible. Take him/her places with you including the pet store. Keep in mind that two females in the same household are a bit much because female boxers are quite antagonistic.

Fifth thing – Boxers make wonderful pets; but like humans, they do have some bad qualities. They can get stubborn if they are not shown the right way on how to act. Be sure to place your puppy in some sort of obedience training class. You want the best for him/her and you.

Sixth thing – Be sure to give your puppy all the exercise he needs to burn off those energy levels. If you don’t, you could have a rather destructive puppy on your hands. Take them for walks, give him space to run around and be sure you play with him/her at the same time.

The Dangers of White Boxer Dogs

Posted by madee998 on March 17th, 2010

Do you know what a boxer dog typically looks like? They are usually a stocky breed, medium-sized with a shiny, smooth and short haired coat that can be fawn colored or brindle without any markings. However, there are some that have been found with white bellies and markings on all their paws. White markings are known as flash because the coloration can appear on the dog’s neck and face. These dogs are known to be “flashy” dogs.

If you see a boxer whose coat is one third white then it is known as a white boxer dog. 20 to 25 percent of boxer dogs are born with white markings. However, this breed cannot be categorized as albino. If you want a boxer dog, there are things you should know before you decide on a white boxer dog.

Like the problems suffered by light colored humans, white boxer dogs can suffer from them as well. White boxer dogs are at a high threat for sunburns, skin cancers and other such disorders. Boxers have a piebald gene that does two things to these white boxer dogs. First, it is to responsible for the extra white pigmentation found in the dogs. Second, it is to blame for deafness defect that occurs in these dogs at birth. The auditory nerve cells are typically damaged and because of this, most white boxer dogs are deaf in one ear, if not both of them.

At one time, white boxer puppies were put to death. However, times have changed. Breeders now place these dogs in pet homes under certain requirements including neutering. Many Boxer clubs do not include these dogs in breeding programs and usually ineligible in shows. They are, however, able to join in other types of activities including dexterity and compliance. They are equal when competing against their fawn and brindle counterparts, no matter their genetic disposition.

White boxer dogs do not get out of dealing with diseases the fawn and brindle dogs deal with. They can still suffer from degenerative myelopathy, hypothyroidism, boxer cardiomyopathy, hip dysplasia and SAS. The more common inherited conditions are gastric dilatation, allergies and intestinal problems. White boxer dogs can also have an eyelid deformity called entropion. Surgery is used to fix this problem.

There have been some issues in which some breeds have been diagnosed with spondylosis deformans. This means the spine has been fused. For this reason alone, buy boxer dogs from a reputable breeder. These breeders will be conscientious of the dogs and have specified tests ran before selling any puppy. By screening these dogs, they can look for pups that will make excellent propagation stock.
